SHIBUYA, TOKYO — Photographer Alvin Kean Wong presents Roller Zoku, a week-long exhibition and book launch, at 26-11 Udagawacho, Shibuya City, Tokyo 150-0042, May 21–27, 2023.

‍The show marks the release of Roller Zoku: The Fascinating World of Japanese Rock and Rollers, a limited edition of 500 signed and numbered copies documenting Japan's rockabilly subculture, designed By New York Publisher Small Editions.

‍Wong began the project in Yokohama in January 2019, photographing Daigo "Johnny" Yamashita, frontman of the band Johnny Pandora, and later followed the band on tour through Canada — their last shows before the pandemic. The exhibition, staged steps from Shibuya Crossing, brought Rollers and passersby face to face with the work for a week, closing each night with a signing and a live set from Johnny Pandora.

NEW YORK — Photographer Alvin Kean Wong presents Roller Zoku: Journey into Tokyo's Rock and Roll Tribe, an exhibition at Cafe Studio, 195 Chrystie Street, New York, NY 10002, February 21–22, 2025.

The show presents Wong's photographs of Japan's rockabilly subculture, drawn from a project that began in Yokohama in 2019, when Wong first photographed Daigo "Johnny" Yamashita, frontman of the band Johnny Pandora. Over the following years, Wong traveled with Johnny's band, documenting a community devoted to keeping 1950s rock and roll alive in Japan. The exhibition follows the 2023 launch of Wong's book, Roller Zoku: The Fascinating World of Japanese Rock and Rollers, in Shibuya, Tokyo.

NEW YORK — Photographer Alvin Kean Wong will present a new chapter of Roller Zoku in April 2026 at Cafe Studio, 195 Chrystie Street, Unit 102W, New York, NY 10002, marking the close of world-renowned rockabilly band Johnny Pandora's American tour.

Following the exhibition's 2025 , this new chapter centers on a screening of The Strangers, a documentary Wong developed over the past year on Harajuku's celebrated rock-and-roll pioneers. The film has since been selected for film festivals including Cannes, Toronto, New York, and Los Angeles.

The evening includes a book signing with Wong and Johnny Pandora, a conversation between the two, and a live performance, as Johnny and members of Roller Zoku travel from Japan for the occasion.

The Strangers extends Wong's ongoing documentation of Japan's rockabilly subculture, which began in Yokohama in 2019 and produced a limited-edition monograph launched in Shibuya, Tokyo, in 2023.
